Thomas J. Votta, P.E. (1967-2009) was an early leader in creating and advancing environmental best practices in collaboration with organizations throughout the world. He received his B. S. in Civil/Environmental Engineering from the University of Vermont in 1989, and an M. S. in Environmental Management and Policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In addition to earning his PE from the State of Vermont and working on clean water design projects with Metcalfe and Eddy, Tom was a senior scientist with the Tellus Institutes Business and Sustainability Group, and served as the Deputy Director of the Chemical Strategies Partnership.
He pioneered work in the areas of resource management, supply chain management, pollution prevention, environmental accounting, and corporate environmental strategy. He worked with a range of companies and institutions, including General Motors, Raytheon, and Lockheed Martin as well as the U. S. EPA, counties, and local school districts. Tom was an intellectual leader, advancing environmental best practice with his tremendous work and clever humor.
The University of Vermont (UVM) is an ideal location to host the Thomas J Votta Fund for the Environment due to its outstanding environmental leadership. UVM is well known as one of the nations premier environmental universities. Environmental awareness and a concern for sustainability imbue all aspects of student life, university operations, and research institutes, and colleges. Students seek the best in environmental education at the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics, and the Environmental Engineering program, among other programs of the university. UVM has a proud legacy of students and alumni who are creating ecologically sustainable, socially equitable, and economically efficient solutions for our fragile planet.
The Thomas J Votta Fund for the Environment will be used to provide annual graduate level scholarship assistance to students who, like Tom, wish to make a difference in solving environmental problems, using environmental best practices to meet this goal. This person will be known as the Thomas J Votta Scholar.
The Votta Fund is not far from reaching the $100,000 preliminary goal needed to endow the fund, and any donor may contribute.
