There was some late summer news that didn’t make it into the last Vermont Quarterly. I heard from both Annie Viets and Marc “Maypo” Milowsky, who did a bike for cancer tour again. They once again cycled 100 miles through the White Mountains in the Prouty to support cancer research. Marc and wife, Patty French ’73 Milowsky, were presented an award at the event by New Hampshire Governor John Lynch in recognition of their involvement over the years with the Norris Cotton Cancer Center. The first of their four daughters will be married in October. Annie sailed Lake Champlain with Rick “Reckless” Landsman on his new J-30 before taking an associate professor position at the School for International Training in Brattleboro this fall. Annie’s daughter, Anna, is in the UVM class of 2010. Marc did not make it up for the Burlington High School reunion, but Dick Peisch did, and sat next to Carl Lisman ’67, chair of the UVM Board of Trustees. Myron Grauer and wife, Graczyna, stopped in Burlington last summer on their way to spending a few days at Walt Blasberg’s North Hero House. Interestingly, I did not get to see Myron and Graczyna. I read in the local paper that Dave Reece traveled up to Waterbury, Vermont, when the Boston Bruins trained there, and he did some PR with another former UVM hockey goalie, Tim Thomas ’97. There was a nice insert in the paper about Dave’s stint in the NHL. I also ran into Owen Jenkins and Wendy Reilly Jenkins ’73 at the Vermont Symphony Orchestra. They were very friendly, but they didn’t have any news except to say that they are well. Owen still practices law, and he may be worried about what might be printed in his alma mater’s alumni news (?). Tom Reilly showed up at a Women in Business Panel for UVM alumnae in New York—at my urging. Tom is coming up to campus for the Football Weekend in late October, and he will no doubt visit with Gerry Elliott, Bob Lynch, Tom McLaughlin, and Gene Monahan, who also have registered for the weekend. More on that in the next issue. I want to end this column by reporting that Liz Mead Foster and I will travel to Honduras to work on a Rotary International “Vermont Hands to Honduras at Tela” January 26– February 2, 2008. Liz did this last year and I missed the opportunity, so we have signed up for the 2008 program to work on a water system. It is promised that there are no skills required, and I expect to have a great time with Liz helping with this Rotary project. Mona Stein Klaber wrote: “My older son, Andrew, is in the joint JD/MBA program at Harvard. My younger son, Robby, graduated from Brown in May and is spending a fellowship year at University of Cambridge. We came back from a wonderful trip to China and we are dreaming about where we’d like to retire. I saw my UVM roomie Sue Adler Weingarten in Chicago in April. Her son Jason, is engaged to the niece of her AEPhi sorority sister, Joan Bronheim ’70.” Please write!

Ken Cuneo has a suggestion for our next class reunion. “Why not have a class bash with a reunion of the band Anvil? Wouldn’t that be a hoot.” Since 1976, Ken has lived in New Hampshire, where he is a land surveyor.

Pam Gillman McDermott represented UVM at the inauguration of Harvard University’s new president, Drew Faust, last October. Pam said, “It was an honor to represent UVM and wear our cap and gown at the Inauguration of Harvard’s 28th President, Drew Gilpin Faust. We occupied a prestigious position in the procession between Williams College and UNC at Chapel Hill, based on our founding year, 1791.”

Rob Lanza and wife Susan, of Melrose, Massachusetts, attended UVM’s 203rd graduation to watch his daughter, Jennifer Brett Lanza ’07, receive her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. Jennifer will now attend the PhD program in organic chemistry at the University of Utah. Meanwhile, Rob’s younger daughter is a senior at MIT, studying chemical engineering. She did a summer internship at A.T. Kearney in New York City. Rob and the family plan to do some serious skiing at Alta in the coming years. Richard Hayes lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife, Sharron Fuchs. They met in the Peace Corps during the mid-seventies, and they have two sons, Austin and Evan. Austin is a surgical resident in Seattle, Washington (no, not on “Grey’s Anatomy”) after graduating from Columbia University. Evan will begin his second year of college in the fall. Richard is the senior technical writer with Forensic Waterproofing Consultants, and Sharron is a chiropractor. Richard sent a shout out to Leigh Rosenberg, Richard’s chum on Oakland Terrace. Still in Kansas City? Friends can contact Richard at mrrn hayes@msn.com. Keep in touch and send in your news. It’s great to hear from all of you!

Campus life has been very busy thus far in Burlington. The new Davis Center is fantastic, one of the largest “green” buildings on a college campus. Don’t miss it next time you are in the Burlington area. Not much news to report. After working for years in the asset management group of a large international law firm in New York City, Eva Posner now is director of mutual fund products with AIG SunAmerica Asset Management Company in Jersey City, New Jersey. When not working, she enjoys traveling, and most recently, she took a trip to Germany, the Czech Republic, Iceland, Spain, and the Canary Islands, She plans to visit Mexico soon. Eva lives in New York City with her cat Barney. Don’t forget to email me with your updates.

This column is an embarrassment of riches! I have more news to share with you than in any prior column. So here goes: Susan Shepherd Delaney wrote that all is well at fifty in San Francisco. Susan, her husband, John, daughter, Lindsay, and son, Jack, moved to San Francisco in 2000. She wrote that they were back on campus in January, because they were in Burlington for her father’s funeral. Susan went back to teaching kindergarten when her youngest started high school. The school is one block from her home! Gretchen Gyr Cantor wrote from Ann Arbor, Michigan that she and her husband, David, moved to Lucerne, Switzerland. She writes that the move is work-related, but she is really glad to be “back looking at mountains from their window” after living many years in the flat Midwest. Janine McCreary Haun of Pompey, New York, visited with several of our classmates, including Greg and Kelly Allen and their two daughters in Port St. Lucie, Florida, last fall. They also got together with Don and Deb Putnam in Fort Pierce. She had a short but sweet visit with classmate Stephanie Cheevers last summer in Maine, while she was on a 1,000-mile motorcycle trip. Karen Raidt Mooney of Guilford, Connecticut, has been teaching special education students in the Guilford School System for the past twenty years. She and her youngest son traveled to Paris to visit her daughter, and they absolutely loved France. Karen sends a very special “hello” to Kathleen Humphreys. Lori Chandler Benson, one of my old roommates, is living in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. She now has a Massachusetts real estate license, and she started working for Jack Conway Realtors in 2006. She continues to work in donor relations at BSC part-time. Linda Purdy Owen of Bethesda, Maryland, says she would really like to hear from her former roommate and Alpha Chi sister, Debbie Lewis King. Erica Reichart Young and her daughter, Allyssa, live in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Erica keeps busy at IBM as a partner in Global Business Services after a long career at Ernst & Young Management Consulting. She wrote that she and her daughter love to travel, and they have set their sights on a trip to Italy. Erica sends her regards to “Libby, Marge and Dave.” Carol Tyler Shepherd of Burlington, Vermont wrote that she has been “happily re-married for five years to a retired UVM professor.” They travel as much as they can and enjoy their grandchildren. Holly MacIvor Robbins of Burlington, Vermont, is a middle school nurse, and she is very glad she has all of the school holidays and summers off. She still keeps in touch with Rosemary Noonan and Ann Harding Burdet, both of whom have families and live in the Burlington area. Peter Katz of Redwood City, California, wrote that he and two partners opened a gourmet hamburger restaurant called “The Counter” in Palo Alto, California, and all UVMers are invited to stop by and have a great meal. Peter plans to open a second restaurant in San Jose, California, in the near future. Check out his web site at www.thecounterburger.com. Clark Amadon of Moretown, Vermont, reported that his daughter Cait, is in grad school in Ireland, while his daughter, Sara, is assistant director of student affairs at Brandeis University. Clark would love to hear from Scott Goodman ’80. Judith Harvey Williams of Thetford Center, Vermont teaches second grade science. She is “delighted to bring natural science education into the center of our elementary school curriculum.” Lauren Parkinson Shelton of Burlington, Vermont, is an early childhood educational consultant. She recently published an article entitled “People, Pulp and Paper in New Zealand: Friendships Formed Through Hand Papermaking” in Childspace magazine, published in Wellington, New Zealand. Last but not least, your devoted secretary is happily relocated to Boise, Idaho, where I am the executive assistant to the president/CEO of a growing real estate development company that builds affordable housing in eleven western states. The dogs and I love it in Idaho! Send me your updates, please! And plan now to attend our 30th Reunion on May 29-June 1, 2008.

We note with sadness the death on July 2 of Peter Edward Boyden in New Jersey. Peter received his paralegal certificate at New York University. He was an avid runner, having completed both the New York City and Boston marathons, several times each. He is survived by his partner of twenty-seven years, Randy Turner. Brenda Needham, superintendent of schools in the Windsor School District in Vermont, wrote that she has been named 2007 Vermont Superintendent of the Year by the Vermont Superintendents Association. I celebrated my 50th with a surprise party last September with several UVMers in attendance, including Anne Trask Forcier and her husband, Larry; Mary Kay Mcguire Conte and her husband, Chuck; Eileen Sheehan McCann and her husband, Peter ’78; Barbara Buck and her husband, Bill Cohen; and Janet Owens ’81. If you celebrated “the big one” this year, birthday greetings! Please continue to send news for our class column. Hope you can make it back to UVM soon for a hockey or basketball game.

Thank you to all who have stayed in touch. It is so great hearing from everyone. Greetings to Peter Wollenberg of St. Louis, Missouri, who wrote to say that he spent a beautiful week swimming and kayaking last July in Deer Isle, Maine, with Dan Merson and his family, who make their home in Falmouth, Maine. Peter also reported his recent promotion to vice president of operations with Wollenberg Conservation, LLC., in Saint Louis. As many of you may know, I graduated with a degree in English and theater. What you may not know is that I am also a closet “Star Trek” fan. Imagine my surprise when watching reruns on the Spike Network when I saw a familiar face, Andrew Hill Newman, in an episode of “Star Trek Voyager.” A quick “Google” showed that he has been quite busy post-UVM, making his Broadway debut in Merlin only two short years after graduation. Other credits include appearances in Lethal Weapon 3 and Fools Rush In. He also has appeared as a guest on 30 television shows including “Night Court,” “Hangin with Mr. Cooper,” “Major Dad,” “Murder She Wrote,” “Murphy Brown,” and “Doogie Howser, M.D.” He had recurring roles on “The Commish,” “Room for Two,” “The Amanda Show,” and “Legend.” These days Andrew does more behind the scenes. In 2004 he teamed with Hank Azaria to write and produce Nobody’s Perfect, which won Best Short Film at the 2004 HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado. He is also the executive producer of “Celebrity Poker Showdown”. It is always a pleasure to learn that one of our theater hopefuls found success outside Royall Tyler Theater. As for me, I will always remember Andrew as the guy who treated all the theater majors with respect, even those who didn’t get the “leading” roles. He tried in vain to teach me to juggle and walked me home when we pulled a very late night working on a production at RTT so I wouldn’t have to head across campus alone. He truly deserves the success. Congratulations! I also had a very newsy note from Michael Hoyt of Orange County, California. After graduation, Michael realized his dream of working for a “big” automobile manufacturer. He recently completed twenty-four years with Ford Motor Company. He is currently working with a joint-venture start-up company, CHAMCO (Chinese American Cooperative) AUTO, Inc., which will be the first importer of Chinese passenger vehicles into North America. Having missed the Sigma Phi reunion last April, Michael’s goal is to make a return trip to Burlington in 2008, without fail. He is pleased to report that Orange County is nothing like the TV show, but he does call it “God’s Country Club.” He hasn’t had to deal with snow in more than six years! He sends his best to all, and his sincere hope is that the coming year will be one that will continue to “instill greatness in the UVM community.” Mark Hollister is the new director of Homebase Abroad, the luxury villa-vacation planners. He will be working closely with another UVMer, Mary-Ellen Auger ’76, co-founder of the company. I hope this issue has found you enjoying the winter season. When time and weather permit, please take a few minutes to send me a note about your life since 1980.

John Bartlett reported in July ’07: “I moved from Manhattan Beach, California to London, England with my wife, Cynthia, and three boys, Cameron, 11, Jackson, 9, and Dylan, 5. My employer, Columbia Management, sent me on a global assignment and we should be here for two or three years. It was great to get the fall issue of Vermont Quarterly and see all the positive things happening at UVM. If any of my old UVM buddies would like to visit we would love to have them stay with us. Feel free to contact me. jcbartlett616@gmail.com.” Jay Bayesdorfer adds he’s chief estimator & v.p. at DMJM Harris in NYC and a licensed P.E. His current responsibility includes Second Avenue subway construction and Ground Zero reconstruction. He lives in Ramsey, New Jersey with his twelve-year-old daughter, Lauren, who could end up on the Catamount swim team. Jay wanted to say hi to Pete Melmed, Merritt Brown, Rick Topper, Marge Koestner, Dean Mirabasi, and Brack Hazen and thank them all for turning him on to Little Feat, “Waiting for Columbus”—still a staple in Ramsey! This secretary also has frequent conversations with Pete Melmed ’82, Jim Greenbaum, Rob and Kristin Rogers, Greg Finn, Bill Edwards ’80, and Donna Burbank—my wife! All of these UVMers send their best to all and would love to hear from fellow UVM alums.

Al Dwyer has been abroad for the last thirteen years working in the humanitarian field, and he is currently based in Nairobi Kenya working for USAID’s office of foreign disaster assistance. He and his wife, Katia, whom he met in Brazil, have three sons, John, Caio (Frank) , and Alan III. Last June while on home leave, they loaded up a minivan and spent a few days with Frank Felicelli ’84 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Frank and his wife, Lisa, have three daughters almost the same age as their kids. Frank is teaching high school and coaching in the Chapel Hill area. He also is in regular touch with Ken Jaffe ’84, who is working in the film industry in Los Angeles. Also, please remember to save the date for our 25th Reunion, May 29-June 1, 2008. An exciting new addition this year is the Catamount Kids Camp, a program for children ages four to thirteen, who will attend the weekend’s events with their alumni parents. This affordable camp will give Catamount kids the opportunity to take advantage of UVM’s educational and recreational facilities. Childcare options for children younger than four are also in the works. Finally, a correction: In the Fall 2007 Quarterly, it was stated that our class had lost Rick Shelburne, and the way it was worded it might have been misinterpreted that this loss was recent. For this best friend of mine at UVM, the loss occurred in 2002. My sincerest apologies. Anyone who has not been published and has sent me news, please resend. I believe I missed a few entries. Also, please remember to save the date for our 25th reunion, May 29-June 1, 2008. Thanks.

Thank you to those of you who have written to me. I know everyone is extremely busy, but news of fellow UVM’ers is always appreciated. Anna Bell wrote to tell us that she and Rebecca Kline ’88 both teach at the same middle school in western South Dakota. And Ira Trombley wrote to tell us that he was appointed to the Legislative Information Technology Committee. Ira’s son, Henry, has an on-line business. I hope all of you had a great winter.

Dave MacLaughlin is now co-chairman of the Nashua City Steering Committee for Senator John McCain’s presidential campaign. He is also running for a third term as alderman. Ruben Enchandy was promoted to vice president of engineering at Verdasys. He deals with security software, and he oversees a team of forty people. He also is responsible for the development, implementation, and testing of software products. Marilyn Cipolla recently visited Jen Dahlquist Schonher and Sandy Balin in San Francisco. Both are doing great. I hope everyone is planning to come back to UVM to celebrate our 20th reunion. In the meantime, I would love to hear from more of you for the next issue.

Not much news to report this time around. It seems we go from feast to famine. A short column leaves us looking for more news from our friends, so keep the updates coming! Luckily, one long-lost friend did email, so we are not completely without news. Thanks to Tony Shulman, who recently enjoyed a visit back to New England where he got together with his old friend and former roommate Christopher Rhodes ’87. They had front row seats at the top of the “Green Monstah,” where they watched the Sox beat the Blue Jays. Then, it was just like the old days as they toured many of the finer watering holes in Boston. Tony recently celebrated his 12th anniversary as the owner/operator of Q’s Billiard Club in Reno, Nevada, where he lives with his wife, Elena Kraus Shulman, and their daughters, Allie and Samantha. Chris is a partner in the Rhode Island law firm, Harrington & Rhodes. Hope you all had happy holidays and are settling peacefully into the New Year.
