Brian Cobb, who is a professor of education at Colorado State University, has a blended family comprising four children and four grandchildren. The professor does return to Vermont frequently to see family and catch up with friends. Brian and his wife are already planning their retirement in two years and hope to play golf and travel internationally. UVM Hockey team opened up the season here in Ohio at Miami University. George Kreiner, my brother, who has a son at Miami, and I traveled to Oxford for the tournament. UVM won the tournament and looked very strong. This was the inaugural game in Miami’s brand new multi-million-dollar hockey complex, and UVM has the distinction of scoring the first six goals in the new facility. Besides watching UVM handily beat Colgate and Miami, we played 27 holes of golf at Shaker Run near Cincinnati.

Happy fall to everyone! It’s been fun running into classmates on the west and east coasts this season. I was fortunate to have a dinner with Linda Blackwood and Bill Allard in San Francisco—this is becoming an annual mini-reunion. Linda is senior faculty at San Francisco State University and still loves her work. Bill is still doing media—current projects are: Dick in Dubya www.dickndubya.com, Behind the Comedy: Thirty Years of Duck’s Breath Mystery Theater www.ducksbreath.com, and Trouble in Toulee www.TouleeTheMovie.com. Bill is a real hoot—he still has lots of energy and ideas. I met Lon and Janey Williams Sherman on campus Homecoming/Parents Weekend when they were visiting daughter, Tanya ’10. It’s great fun to see classmates on campus engaged with their student’s current life at UVM. I also saw Joanne Czachor Magliozzi, Susie Campbell, and Ann Hussey Hogaboom at a UVM seminar in Boston October 21st. The UVM event was titled, “100 Things To Do Before You Hit 100!,” and it was great fun deciding on worthwhile activities that are in store for us. We were so busy that we didn’t have time to speak about Dick Peisch, who was in Nantucket for his last fall island weekend of the season. Speaking of Nantucket and Dick Peisch, Liz Mead Foster ran into Dick on Nantucket by chance this summer. Liz was coming in from the water, and Dick is there most of the summer. Liz will kill me for writing this, but it warrants space in the “Class Notes.” She is running the New York Marathon on November 4th again. I think this makes three New York Marathons in Liz’s portfolio. Local classmates will know that Jonathon Leopold is chief administrative officer for the City of Burlington, but I also wanted those from afar to know. Robert Sydney let us know that a few classmates celebrated their own reunion in Alaska in 2006. Jay Keillor, Doug Kerr, Arnie Brown, Tom Watkinson, and Rob Sydney flew to Seattle and boarded a ferry in Bellingham for a four-day scenic cruise up the Alaska marine highway. They disembarked in Skagway and then drove the 1,800 miles with a UVM banner proudly displayed in the driving compartment. They met up with the sixth member of the group, Bill Ridder, in Delta Junction, near Fairbanks, and they all marveled at the four-bedroom log home, which featured an incredible view out the front window looking beyond the 18 sled dogs milling around their kennels. The group completed their trip in Homer, the halibut fishing capital of the world. On December 9, my son, Robert ’01, will wed wonderful Dina in Palm Beach, Fla. It should be a terrific and interesting celebration as our new Ukrainian relatives meet the Sprayregens (including Uncle Phil ’74) and the Wilburs. Please email, call, or write with news.

Susan Hanna of Old Greenwich, Conn., was on campus last October for Homecoming and Parents Weekend, visiting her son, Brian, who is in his first year at UVM. She also participated in the UVM School of Business Financial Panel, sharing her career background with students. Susan is managing director at GE Capital Markets, Inc., in Norwalk, Conn. While on campus, Susan met with Sarah Wilbur (’71) Sprayregen, who works in UVM’s Alumni and Parent Programs Office, to discuss our 35th Reunion. Susan will see that Nancy Cathcart gets involved! She and Sarah also hatched the idea of asking Jim Lampman to “host” our Saturday evening class event at his Lake Champlain Chocolate Factory on Pine Street in Burlington. Jim thinks it’s a great idea, and we are now working on the details. Imagine sampling chocolates, ice cream, and coffees while enjoying a light dinner with jazz playing in the background! This promises to be a fantastic reunion, which will only be enhanced by your presence. If you would like to be involved in planning the event, please contact me at the address below. Jennifer Rounds Nelson of Ryegate, Vt., represented UVM at the inauguration of Sterling College’s new president last September. Phil Lahar has been living and working near Washington, D.C. since 1978. He is director of business development for Nortel Government Solutions, focused on HHS and the National Institutes of Health. His son, Nick, is in his third year of medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University, and his daughter, Rebecca, the main ice hockey goalie for Colgate University for four years, graduated last year and is now an investment banker. Phil spent a few years working for AT&T and Iridium in Russia and the former Soviet Union, thanks to the Russian he learned at UVM. He would love to hear from classmates at PHILLAHAR@aol.com.

Mary Whaley Kiefer wrote from Hudson, Ohio, that a group of ’73ers had a mini-reunion last August at the home of Mike Walsh '72 and his wife, Lucille, in Marshfield, Mass., including Fred Koehler and wife Joan of Simsbury, Conn.; Ginny Beeson of Arlington, Va.; Polly Prior Beeson and husband Alec, Ginny's brother, of Bucksport, Maine; Sharon Corey of Bethel, Vt.; Brenda Stone of Northfield, Vt.; Mike ’75 and Becky Morse Nawrath of Manchester, Vt.; Sally Streeter Zoppo of Needham, Mass.; Sue Bicknell of Asheville, N.C. Mary celebrated her 25th wedding anniversary on July 4 with her husband, Jay, a dentist in Newton Falls, Ohio. They have three daughters: Emily, a recent William Smith College grad now doing a year with AmeriCorps at the Northeast Ohio Coalition for Homeless; Julia, a sophomore at Smith College; and Laura, a junior in high school. Greetings, everyone! After reading the class notes in the Vermont Quarterly over the past year, I noted that our class no longer had a class secretary and, consequently, not as many notes. Although I am probably not the right person for the job, since I transferred to UVM in January of our sophomore year and lived off campus the entire time (and did not meet as many of you as I would have liked), I thought it was important that our class have someone in the position, especially with our 30th reunion coming up this spring. I, for one, have kept up with far too few classmates, including my roommates, but I am sure I am not alone. I am married with four children, ages 16, 14, 12 and eight (obviously a little breather before the last one). My wife and I have been in business together for 20 years after both of us spent 10 years on Wall Street, with a short break for MBAs at Columbia University. We run a publishing business in Connecticut focused exclusively on the health care merger, acquisition, and finance markets, and it provides us with the much-needed flexibility to raise our four children. I return to Quechee, Vt., many times in the winter and always think about UVM and what it has meant to me. Bob Walsh reported in that he is enjoying life in Fair Oaks Ranch, Texas, along with his partner, Julie Patterson, and their children, Jake and Ann. Jake has just started pre-kindergarten, while Ann just started to walk. Meanwhile, Bob practices law and enjoys working on his garden, with his first crop of wine grapes due to ripen just in time for our reunion. Julie has accepted a new position at USAA, transitioning from government relations manager (aka lobbyist) to business architect. Speaking of reunions, Barbara Goldberg Best informed us that she, Jane Griffith Buskirk, Patty Donlan Greenfield and Cindy Hayes Little all enjoyed their second annual overnight trip to Montreal. In addition to being classmates at UVM, they have been friends since junior high days. To celebrate knowing each other for 32 years, a group of classmates who lived on the same floor in Wright Hall our freshman year got together for a special lunch. In attendance were Dolly Bellhouse, Betsy Giovine Vogel, Linda Holleran Johnson, Katie Rankin Raneri, Colleen Morey, and Pam Reisenweaver Armold.

Charles Roy is currently stationed in the Green Zone in Baghdad as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is serving due to the mobilization of his reserve unit, but he has been in the military since graduation both in the active National Guard and reserve status. Charles has been overseas since last summer. He reported that he has much face-to-face contact with the Iraqi military, giving him a new respect for their circumstances. When not overseas, he works in retail management for Eckerd Pharmacy in China Grove, N.C. He and his wife have four children and three grandchildren. Charles hopes to return to the States this summer. I’m sure you all join me in wishing him a safe and joyous homecoming. Have a glorious winter and please keep in touch.

Peter Lareau was appointed senior vice president and division head of human resources, compliance, and training at Glens Falls National Bank. He joined the bank in 1982, and he currently serves on numerous boards and volunteers extensively in the Glens Falls, N.Y., area. Pamela Gras Baker lives in Au Sable Forks, N.Y., where she and her husband are building a post-and-beam home. Their two dogs, a golden retriever and a samoyed, are their “children.” They love living in the Adirondacks because they love outdoor adventures. The Bakers sold Just Sports in 2005, but Pamela still loves working in retail at Perrywinkle’s Fine Jewelry in Plattsburgh. Jenifer Crowell of Beaufort, N.C., has been known as “Sky Blue the Clown” at Duke Children’s Hospital for the past 13 years. She also performs at festivals and at UNC Hospital. Jenifer also works with a murder mystery troupe, and she is an artist with an open studio in Beaufort, N.C. Amy Perkins Moore has resettled in Yorktown, Va., with her children, Meghan and Sean. Her husband, Col. Jim Moore, was tragically killed in a helicopter crash in Texas in November 2004. Amy and her children are enjoying their new home and community, “which is just as Jim would have wanted.” Doug Blondin traveled from Colorado to attend UVM’s Summer Learning Adventures last July. He enjoyed learning about the history of Lake Champlain with UVM’s Professor Andre Senecal.

Here are a few highlights from my family here in Chicago. I’ve been traveling a fair bit this year and am pleased to report that I am attending a conference in Burlington soon. I’m looking forward to seeing my UVM friends. When my son Giffin went to the homecoming football game at Highland Park High School this fall, it really hit me that time is going by way too fast. Last spring, he asked if he could pull the car out of the driveway. I subsequently explained the driver’s permit requirements to him, and when I saw the disappointment on his face, I explained that he is legally allowed to take flight lessons. One week later, he flew over the Chicago skyline with his flight instructor. As for my other sons, Niles, Sullivan, and Jack Henry, who are involved in football, baseball, and basketball, I am on a first name basis with the claims administrator at our health insurance company. Julie Howell is thrilled to report that she married Brian Hehir on June 17 at a ceremony overlooking Lake Champlain in Grand Isle, Vt. Longtime UVM friends Marty Beede Vatis, Laurie Colon, Sally Koch Hayes, Patty Boydell Sisca, and Sue Dacey Scheer, were there to help celebrate the happy occasion. Both Julie and Brian work in Burlington. Julie works for GE Healthcare, and Brian is a local attorney. They live in Jericho, Vt.

Joanne Hayes wrote with some very sad news. Catherine Golden, track star, excellent student, and great friend, died on New Year’s Eve in 2004. She had a long and valiant struggle with ovarian cancer. Cathy was living in Santa Cruz, Calif., and she had worked for NASA for many years after earning her PhD, and she later did some private contracting work for them. Catherine was an avid outdoors enthusiast and athlete. Everyone that knew her will always remember her smile and laugh. Joanne is a family nurse practitioner. She lives in Vermont with her husband and two children. Stefanie Jacobson Kreiger lives in Connecticut with her two daughters. Last year, she opened her own veterinary practice with a friend and colleague in Shelton, Conn. She also let us know that she, Allyson Martin Malone, and Lauren Morando Rhim got together in Manchester, Vt., to celebrate their big 40th birthdays. Allyson recently moved to Fayetteville, Ark. Lauren and her family live in Bethesda, Md. While visiting my oldest son Jake at Camp Lenox this summer, I ran into some UVMers. The camp is owned by Rich Moss and his wife, Stephanie. My husband was the camp doctor for a week, and, while there, he worked with Judy Saffer ’85, who was the camp nurse. On visiting day, we bumped into David Nadell, who was visiting his son and daughter.
