Fraser Drew wrote from his home in Williamsville, N.Y., that at 98 years of age he still corresponds with his Randolph High School senior Latin and French teacher, Muriel Richardson Chatherton ’28. He also keeps in touch with former Green Mountain and Buffalo State college students. Several Buffalo State alumni continue to come to his home for monthly literature seminars. Some of Fraser’s favorite memories of UVM include special professors, President Bailey and Boulder dinners, and the “Owl House” and Lambda brothers. Elizabeth Aiken Martin of Stowe, Vt., has two new great-grandchildren. She has many happy memories of her time at UVM, including her sorority Pi Beta Phi.

Marti Davis wrote with news of her husband, Gordon Davis. She wrote, “Gordon retired as geochemist from Carnegie Institute of Washington, D.C., 25 years ago. After that he enjoyed traveling and camping in the U.S. and Canada with Nicki, his second wife. (His first marriage only lasted 34 years.) His son, Bob, a geologist, has four children, and now there is a great-granddaughter in the Washington area who is the apple of his eye. Gordon and Nicki have been married 37 years, and are enjoying “these years of good companionship.” As for me, in September I shall be 95. I feel very blessed to be 94, and, like Gordon, to be in “pretty good health” and still able to enjoy our 20 great-grandchildren. The older ones are 15 years old and the youngest is three. My granddaughter, Karen Venner, is not married but has adopted four children, two of them blood brothers two years apart. All of my great-grandchildren now live nearby in Burlington.

We recently learned of the death of Charlotte Clark Rand from her sister. Charlotte was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, and she will also be remembered as an outstanding student, as evidenced by her Phi Beta Kappa membership. It is also my unhappy task to report the loss of another of our classmates. Roger Whitcomb died on February 25, 2006, at the age of 90. Roger served as the Orleans County agriculture agent for 36 years. His tireless service was greatly appreciated by all who knew him. Roger is survived by his wife of 67 years, our classmate Ruth White Whitcomb, and by their four children, nine grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren, as well as a large extended family.

Once again it was great to hear from Bernie Lisman reporting on our 1939 Scholarship Fund. Six deserving students received aid this year. Bernie and his wife, Natalie, are living in Florida, where he enjoys playing golf. Martha Rist Suitor has a summer home in the same area. Lucille Bristol Jerard joined Martha and me for lunch. Lucille and her husband, Jerry, live in Brattleboro, Vt. Ruth Wimett lives in Pittsford, Vt., and Web Thompson lives in South Burlington. Col. Arthur Datnoff, a retired doctor living in Columbia, S.C., was honored by the Freemasons for his excellence in leadership, dedication, and service as a member of this organization. Finally, I am sad to report that Elma Herrick Woods passed away recently.

During the 1980s, Veleida Fleming Reed and her husband, Earl, enjoyed programs for exchanging American business professionals with their counterparts in Greece, England, Spain, Brazil, and Colombia. This involved exchanging homes and sometimes automobiles. The Reeds make their home in Lakeland, Fla. Lucien Paquette was looking forward to catching up with classmates at Reunion. He makes his home in Middlebury, Vt. Heath Riggs and his wife, Harriet, lived on Treasure Island, near St. Petersburg, Fla., from the end of December through mid-February. They have enjoyed the balmy winters there for several years. Last year, they served as grand marshals of the Fourth of July parade in their lively community of Richmond, Vt. They look forward to attending UVM reunions. Flossie Wade Eaton wrote, “After nearly 50 years of a very happy marriage, I became a single again. My husband died February 5 after a brief illness. I am grateful that we were already living in senior housing.” Dr. H. Gordon Page took time from his golf game to report on his activities since graduating with the “Aggie” class of 1940. After graduation, he worked in the UVM Extension Service in Burlington. He entered the College of Medicine in the fall of 1942 and graduated in 1945. He then served in World War II in Germany and Japan. After the war, he returned to Burlington, where he did surgical training. In 1951, he began an enjoyable medical practice with Dr. A.G. Mackay. Since his retirement in 1991, he admits to “laying around”! Like all of us, he is saddened by the loss of old friends, but he retains his enthusiasm for UVM.

The February issue of Boston magazine featured “The Top Doctors,” a list of 250 specialists in the area. Jane Allen Hadley’s daughter, Dr. Susan Hadley, was named among physicians expert in the field of infectious disease. She is on the staff at Tufts-New England Medical Center and had recently spent time caring for patients in Nicaragua. Also on the list was your secretary’s son, Dr. Pardon Kenney, who is chief of surgery at the Faulkner Hospital and clinical professor of surgery at Tufts School of Medicine. Classmates will be sad to learn of the death on January 1, 2006, of Fleda Angie Jones, who had been living in Dayton, Ohio. For more than 40 years, Fleda was a social worker in Providence, RI. Relatives hope to have a memorial service for her this summer in Vermont.

Ann Cohn Werner of Highland Beach, Fla., was honored by the Greater Bath area Chamber of Commerce for being an “outstanding New York State citizen” by having a day declared “Anna Werner Day.” Word from Fred Webster is that he continues to be retired and is still actively involved with his project of preserving biochemistry equipment. He was hoping to see the following classmates at Reunion: Jack Burger, Frances May Ville, Frank Livak, and Bob Bickford.

First and foremost, please note that I have a new email address listed at the end of this column. We recently purchased a new computer, and it is a revelation to me. To those of you out there who use a computer, I would appreciate it if you would send me an email so that I will have your email address in my files. If you do not use a computer, I would be happy to hear from you in the old-fashioned way. I recently read an article entitled “60 Years Down the Lane,” which told of the lives of Betty Jenks Lane, our classmate, and her husband Bill Lane, ’45, on the occasion of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Theirs is the story of yet another wonderful relationship that began at UVM. Both teachers, they were lured to New York State, where early on Bill headed the LeRoy, N.Y., Central School’s music department for 17 years. They raised a family of five, and Betty went on to earn a master’s degree in library science. In 1965, she was hired by Geneseo Community College to organize their library, and she was the first woman on the faculty. She was honored for 40 years of employment there. Bill also earned a master’s of library science degree, and he left LeRoy to become a reference librarian at SUNY Geneseo. Bill retired in 1984; Betty, in 1990. Betty continues to work at the Geneseo archives department, and she was recently honored as “Employee of the Month” for her enthusiastic support of and contribution to the institution throughout its history.

Mary Boardman Ciaschini and I went to the Theta Founder’s Day luncheon in Sarasota. Mary, an accomplished quilter, displayed a beautiful wall hanging of Theta kites. We had lunch with Nancy McNamara Harris and husband Cliff, who spend the winter in Florida. They recently enjoyed a tour of western National Parks, Lake Powell, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and more. They still spend some time in the summer at Starr Farm in Burlington. Once again, your secretary spent two months with my sister, Pauline Bristol (’37) Noonan in Englewood, Fla. We enjoyed an Elderhostel program in Winter Park. The main attraction was Cirque de Soleil’s “La Nouba.” We had a nice visit with Alberta Reed Reed at her waterfront winter quarters in Englewood. Also from Englewood, there is sad news that our home ec class has lost another classmate. Barbara Law Greenmore passed away in July 2005. Jackie Swayzie Smith of Cornish, Maine, is so fortunate to have all five of her children living nearby. She can enjoy all her grandchildren as well as her three-year-old great-grandchild. Jackie is still active in her community, and she keeps in touch with UVM and classmates. I recently talked to Mary Jean Dunsmore Cox, who has been visiting her daughter in Reno. She will also spend several months with her son in California. Mary Jean keeps fit by walking 570 miles in three months and is still going.

Allaire Blake Nownes wrote from Hampton, N.H., that she visited Killington last October. She also enjoyed touring the Shelburne Museum as well as a boat trip on Lake George. Ellen Page Reid let us know that she has moved to Shelburne, Vt. Now that she’s so close to campus, she hopes to get together with UVM friends and to be more actively involved in alumni activities. Julia Hurley Goelz makes her home in Portland, Ore., where she lives next door to her daughter, Susan. She enjoys playing bridge and being a “Homework Helper” at the local library. She especially looks forward to visiting friends in San Francisco. Warren Field lives on Cape Cod in Centerville, Mass. He has been enjoying the past 20 years in retirement. After 17 years of camping, Nancy Tobey Shisler and husband Joe sold their RV. They now “luxuriate in motels.” Nancy still sings with two barbershop groups as well as choral groups. The Shislers make their home in Zephyrhills, Fla.
