2005 George V. Kidder Outstanding Faculty Award Winner
Professor "Huck" Gutman, English Department
Professor Huck Gutman has been a member of the English department faculty since 1971. For more than 30 years, he has continued to excite his students with his love of poetry and literature. Traditional and non-traditional students alike
have written thoughtful, touching letters on his behalf, outlining how his teaching and scholarship changed their academic experience at UVM. Some he influenced to continue to pursue their studies to the PhD level; others have grasped difficult philosophies through his tutelage; and many have reveled in understanding the written word and the depth of emotion poetry and other literature can evoke. Huck Gutman has inspired numerous students to go beyond the surface of written words to find the deeper meaning in poetry. On his University web site, he offers the wary or inexperienced student advice on reading poetry ("Reading Poems: How to get started" and "Reading Poems II: You CAN read a poem"). Through his influence, students have pushed themselves to the limits while pursuing their own education.
