NY Jazz at Lincoln Center - Ellington Love Songs

On February 14, 2008, nearly fifty-five UVM alumni, parents and friends in New York experienced a special event conceived of by the New York Regional Board - an evening performance of "Ellington Love Songs" at Jazz at Lincoln Center topped off with a once-in-a-lifetime, post-performance meeting with Wynton Marsalis himself.

John Gennari, English professor and Director of ALANA U.S. Ethnic Studies at UVM, contextualized the evening by providing pre-concert remarks about jazz and the program in the Patron's Lounge of the Frederick P. Rose Hall.  In an intimate setting, Professor Gennari informed the UVM group that Duke Ellington was rarely thought of as a musician of love songs, and explained how complicated the theme "love" is in the jazz context.  Prepared with a background on Ellington's style, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and the Jazz Director, Wynton Marsalis, attendees were ready to listen to the program.  Professor Gennari was available during intermission for further questions and conversations about the performance.

The various solo performers including Wess "Warmdaddy" Anderson, the "alternately tough and tender" (All About Jazz) Houston Person and "one of the most melodic saxophone balladeers in jazz" (All About Jazz), Scott Hamilton kept up with the beat of the evening.

Following the performance, guests were escorted to the Green Room, where Wynton Marsalis spent fifteen minutes with our UVM group.  He talked about the audience (not lively enough for Wynton), critiqued the performance, and showed them that he truly is "the Jazz Man."

Jazz has been a recurring theme for UVMers in New York, but the Jazz at Lincoln Center evening marked the first time the board organized a special event on Valentine's Day.  (Thanks go to Brian Acrish '91, Vice Chair of the New York Regional Board, who decided most UVM couples never plan ahead for Valentine's Day!)  The invitation was extended to UVM's leadership donors in the New York region to say thank you for all they do for the University of Vermont.
