MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

President Fogel

To Our Campaign Donors,
What a tremendous achievement!

When we first embarked on The Campaign for the University of Vermont, we set for ourselves the most ambitious fundraising goal in the history of Vermont’s University — $250 million in support for students, faculty, facilities, campus life, and athletics.

One can hardly imagine the reaction of Ira Allen and other University founders back in 1791 to the very notion that such a sum would one day accrue to the institution they launched on a pledge of $4,000 and the gift of fifty acres of choice land overlooking Lake Champlain.

But today, thanks to the generosity of more than 79,000 individual donors and their belief in the mission and future of our cherished Universitas Viridis Montis, we have more than achieved what we set out to accomplish.

Our Campaign total of $278,461,114 has already begun to transform the University of Vermont experience. With $76.1 million raised in support of students, we are able to enhance significantly the scholarship support we can offer the most promising students, making UVM an ever more attractive option among the many colleges and universities competing for the best and the brightest.

The $146.6 million raised in faculty support has created 27 new endowed professorships, including thirteen in the College of Medicine, providing a stable base of funding for the teaching, research, and creative endeavors of some of the University’s most gifted scholars.

Another $22.7 million is dedicated to our campus facilities, including the planned renovation of Billings Hall as a permanent home for the Center for Holocaust Studies, for the Center for Research on Vermont, and for the Libraries’ Special Collections. And the newly completed Dudley H. Davis Center is even now beginning to transform the campus experience and is gaining national attention for its “green” design and student-centered spaces and operating philosophy.

In Athletics, the Moulton Winder Field now provides UVM student-athletes an artificial turf facility worthy of Division I intercollegiate competition for field hockey and lacrosse, and several millions of dollars in athletics scholarships add even more depth to the talented roster of student-athletes whose success in recent years — both academic and athletic — has inspired and thrilled the campus community and indeed the entire state of Vermont.

The impact of our Campaign is everywhere, from the exhibitions that enrich our lives at the Fleming Museum to the caliber of the collections at the University libraries, to the impressive and diverse group of learned speakers who enrich the intellectual life of the campus through the Dan and Carole Burack President’s Distinguished Lecture Series.

These are signal achievements in the life of the University, made possible by the combined efforts of our entire University community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and the friends of UVM.

If not for you, we simply would not have attained the level of excellence that the University of Vermont enjoys today, poised as we are to take our next bold strides toward fulfilling our promise as the nation’s premier small public research university.

With my enduring thanks,

Daniel Mark Fogel
President
