Less remarkable, but absolutely vital to the fiscal health of most colleges and universities, including UVM, are the thousands of smaller gifts that flow into the institution every year through the annual fund. Alumni, parents, friends, faculty, and staff annually contribute more than $6 million to the University of Vermont through the UVM Fund, which ended the 2003-2004 fiscal year with a record-high 20,500 donors and a very healthy $6,201,655 in total contributions.
"That's phenomenal for us," says Alan Ryea, who oversees a staff of eighteen as Director of Alumni and Parent Programs and has overall responsibility for administering the UVM Fund. "I feel very fortunate to be heading up the Fund at this time in the University's history. Our constituencies are feeling very good about the University and where it's headed today, and it's showing both in the numbers of donors and in our total dollars raised."
Ryea and his staff have increased the number of donors to the UVM Fund more than twenty-five percent since 2001, and the yearly totals have trended upward even in a less than robust economy. He credits appreciation of the University's leadership and direction, and awareness of the ongoing Campaign for the University of Vermont, with creating a positive environment for fund raising. Every gift to the UVM Fund, he points out, is counted toward the Campaign's $250 million goal.
