UVM Class of 2007 Senior Week
Dear Seniors,
Congratulations on your graduation and the end of your many years at UVM. We hope you enjoyed Senior Week, and we are proud to report that we received many comments this year about the respectful nature of the Class of 2007.
Unfortunately, we did have some disrespectful behavior that clouds the otherwise positive end of our year. During Senior Week, a small group of students attended one or more Senior Week events with shirts that were not only disrespectful but degrading to women, the gay and lesbian community, the transgender community, the disability community, and many others. The nicknames used on these shirts were vulgar and harmful to many of our friends and UVM staff. We have lost a classmate this year to a violent sexual crime and we have experienced a number of bias incidents. Therefore, the presence of these shirts at Senior Week events is especially disappointing for our class.
The Senior Class Council and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations does not condone this behavior and is currently working with the Office of Affirmative Action, the LGBTQ Services Office, and the Dean of Students Office not only to respond to this incident but also to establish proactive policies and procedures to ensure that we better respond to this behavior in the future. We want to ensure not only the physical safety of students and staff but also psychological, emotional, and mental safety.
If you need to talk about the ways this incident affected you, the

I understand that if I am perceived to violate the student code, I could be suspended from participation in Senior Week events and could be subject to disciplinary processes of the university. I also understand that my inappropriate actions could result in the immediate termination of events for the week and possibly future Senior Weeks.
